12th-ranked Clayton State
finishes tied for 10th at
Aflac/Cougar Invitational
Lakers’ Wilcox
finishes tied for 19th
at 4-over-par 146
 COLUMBUS,
Ga. - October 7, 2008 – After opening with
a 296 for the first round on Monday, the Clayton State Laker
men’s golf team could not gain much ground on Tuesday in the
final round of the Aflac/Cougar Invitational. The 12 th-ranked
Lakers shot a 297 and finished tied for 10th
overall in the talented 17-team field with a 593.
Clayton State finished tied with sixth-ranked Valdosta State,
and finished one stroke behind Georgia Southwestern, and eight
strokes behind both North Alabama and Barry. Clayton State did,
however, knock off top-ranked and defending NCAA Division II
National Champion West Florida by seven strokes. The Argonauts,
who won last week’s State Farm-Laker Collegiate Classic,
finished 13th
overall with a 600.
Second-ranked USC Aiken fired a 7-under 277 in Tuesday’s second
round and won the Aflac/Cougar Invitational with a 569. The
Pacers finished three strokes ahead of Florida Southern and five
strokes ahead of 11th-ranked
and host Columbus State.
Individually for the Lakers, senior All-American Will Wilcox
followed up Monday’s even-par 71 with a 75 to finish tied for 19th
at 4-over 146. Wilcox finished 11 strokes behind Jude Eustaquio,
the low medalist and Division II All-American from Florida
Southern.
In addition to Wilcox, junior Wade Binfield finished tied for 41st
with at 149, while junior Neil Thomas and freshman Jordan Tyler
Massey both finished tied for 54th
with a 151. Sophomore Kevin Duncan rounded out the Clayton State
scoring finishing tied for 71st
with a 155.
Clayton State’s next fall tournament is Queens Invitational on
Monday and Tuesday next week in Bluffton, S.C.
