Fantastic finish! Clayton State men rally past
UNC Pembroke 2-1
Ahern, Pugh score late goals as Lakers improve to 7-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in Peach Belt

PEMBROKE, N.C. - October 4, 2008 – Fantastic finishes are becoming the norm this season for the Clayton State Laker men’s soccer team.

Playing at Peach Belt Conference rival UNC Pembroke on Saturday, the Lakers scored two goals in the final four minutes to pull off a thrilling 2-1 victory at Varsity Grounds. The victory was the fourth straight for Clayton State, which improves to 7-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the Peach Belt Conference.

After starting the season 0-3, the Lakers are now 7-0-1 in their last eight games.

The Lakers trailed 1-0 after UNC Pembroke’s Andy Pullin scored in the 81
st minute off a double assist from Rondell Honora and Miguel Ferrer. However, the drama was just beginning.

Clayton State tied the game in the 86
th minute when Patrick Ahern hammered home a goal in front of the net off a cross from Matty Phillips. Two minutes, later, Ryan Pugh scored the eventual game-winner when UNC Pembroke goalkeeper Horatio Bynes deflected the initial attempt by Phillips.

Clayton State goalkeeper David Cristofoli recorded two saves in the victory for the Lakers, while Bynes recorded two saves for the Braves. The Lakers out-shot UNC Pembroke (5-5, 0-2 PBC) 10-9, and the two teams combined for 39 fouls.

The Lakers are home on Wednesday, playing host to Montevallo at 7 p.m. at Laker Field.
