 PEMBROKE,
N.C. - October 4, 2008 – Fantastic finishes are becoming
the norm this season for the Clayton State Laker men’s soccer
team.
Playing at Peach Belt Conference rival UNC Pembroke on Saturday, the
Lakers scored two goals in the final four minutes to pull off a
thrilling 2-1 victory at Varsity Grounds. The victory was the fourth
straight for Clayton State, which improves to 7-3-1 overall and
2-0-1 in the Peach Belt Conference.
After starting the season 0-3, the Lakers are now 7-0-1 in their
last eight games.
The Lakers trailed 1-0 after UNC Pembroke’s Andy Pullin scored in
the 81 st
minute off a double assist from Rondell Honora and Miguel Ferrer.
However, the drama was just beginning.
Clayton State tied the game in the 86th
minute when Patrick Ahern hammered home a goal in front of the net
off a cross from Matty Phillips. Two minutes, later, Ryan Pugh
scored the eventual game-winner when UNC Pembroke goalkeeper Horatio
Bynes deflected the initial attempt by Phillips.
Clayton State goalkeeper David Cristofoli recorded two saves in the
victory for the Lakers, while Bynes recorded two saves for the
Braves. The Lakers out-shot UNC Pembroke (5-5, 0-2 PBC) 10-9, and
the two teams combined for 39 fouls.
The Lakers are home on Wednesday, playing host to Montevallo at 7
