Clayton State men drop
1-0 heartbreaker in
regular season finale at Lander
Lakers finish 10-5-1 and 5-2-1
in Peach Belt Conference; play host to UNCP in PBC Tournament
 GREENWOOD,
S.C. – October 31, 2009 – With a possible Peach Belt
Conference regular season championship at stake, the Clayton State
Laker men’s soccer team could not cash in on key opportunities on
Saturday, dropping a tough 1-0 decision at rival Lander.
The defeat concludes Clayton State’s regular season at 10-5-1
overall and 5-2-1 in the PBC, and it ends the Lakers’ seven-game
unbeaten streak. Clayton State finishes third overall in the PBC and
will play host to a PBC Tournament quarterfinal game against
sixth-seeded UNC-Pembroke on Tuesday night.
The only scoring in the game occurred early in the fifth minute.
Lander’s Jamie Ramm scored on a header in the penalty box off a long
throw-in by Craig Hughes.
However, Clayton State clearly controlled possession throughout the
game, limiting the Bearcats (10-5-1, 6-1-1 PBC) to only seven shots
the entire time. Meanwhile, the Lakers had 13 shots, but could not
convert the scoring opportunities.
The Lakers had a chance to tie in the 41st
minute when forward Leighton Fredericks had a point-blank
opportunity off a corner kick. But Bearcat goalkeeper Matthew
Atkinson made a diving say. Atkinson later had two key saves on a
possible Clayton State scoring sequence in the second half.
Clayton State goalkeeper David Cristofoli recorded three saves and
allowed only his second goal in the Lakers’ last eight games.
Atkinson recorded five saves for Lander. |
