Clayton State prepares for Top 10 showdown at second-ranked Delta State on Sunday

MORROW, Ga. – December 4, 2007 – After dropping five spots in the first USA Today ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll, the Clayton State Laker women’s basketball team advanced two spots this week to 10th in the nation in this week’s Top 25 Coaches’ Poll.

This is big, as the Lakers enter their next two games which will be against Division II Top 10 opponents and draw some national attention at the Division II level. The Lakers will travel to second-ranked Delta State on Sunday, followed by a showdown on Dec. 16 at eighth-ranked and defending Division II national champion Southern Connecticut State.

Clayton State moved up two spots by virtue of two Peach Belt Conference victories last week. The Lakers won an 80-62 decision at rival Georgia College on Wednesday, followed by a 66-54 victory at home against scrappy UNC-Pembroke on Saturday. The sweep improved head coach Dennis Cox’s squad to 5-1 on the season.

Clayton State is one of two Peach Belt Conference teams ranked in the nation this week. USC-Aiken checks in at No. 24, while Lander, North Georgia and Armstrong Atlantic each received votes.
