Breaks don’t go Clayton State women’s way in 1-0 defeat against Newberry
Shutout defeat drops Lakers to 0-10 on the season

MORROW, Ga. – October 1, 2008 – When a team is struggling, the breaks don’t go its way most of the time. The Clayton State Laker women’s soccer team is finding that out at the moment.

The Lakers couldn’t get a few breaks on Wednesday night as they dropped a tough 1-0 decision against visiting Newberry at Laker Field. Still looking for its first victory on the season, Clayton State is now 0-10 overall.

Both teams played close to the vest in terms of possession and defense inside the penalty box, making for very few offensive opportunities. However, Newberry (5-5) cashed in on one of its few opportunities in the 58
th minute.

Sarah Griffith took a left cross pass from Amberly Fowler and nailed a 20-yard scoring strike from the top of the penalty box over the out-stretched arms of Clayton State goal-keeper Chelsea Bettis.

Clayton State had one last chance to possibly tie the game in the final couple of minutes, but the Newberry defense stiffened inside the penalty box and did not allow a clear shot at the goal.

Bettis recorded three saves for the Lakers, while her Newberry counterpart Emily Rhoades recorded two saves in the shutout. Newberry out-shot Clayton State 12-4.

Clayton State plays at Peach Belt Conference rival UNC Pembroke on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
