UNC Pembroke strikes quick, blanks Clayton State women 3-0
Lakers fall to 0-11 overall and 0-4 in Peach Belt with defeat

PEMBROKE, N.C. - October 4, 2008 – UNC Pembroke struck quickly on Saturday and pulled away with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Clayton State Laker women’s soccer team In Peach Belt Conference action at Varsity Grounds.

The defeat drops Clayton State to 0-11 overall and 0-4 in the Peach Belt Conference.

UNC Pembroke (9-1-1, 1-1-1 PBC) scored all three of its goals within the first 24 minutes of the game, including its first in the opening minutes.

Melanie Cobb gave the Braves a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute with an unassisted goal after Laker goalkeeper Whitney Jowers went down with an injury on the play. UNC Pembroke’s next two goals were practically carbon copies in that both occurred from the right side of the penalty box.

Faye Corbett gave the Braves a 2-0 lead in the 18
th minute with a lofting 17-yard shot over the outstretched hands of Clayton State reserve goalkeeper Chelsea Bettis. Four minutes later, Nisa Aikens drained a lofty goal from the right side, again just out of the reach of Bettis.

UNC Pembroke out-shot Clayton State 20-8. Jowers and Bettis combined for nine saves for the Lakers, while Braves goalkeeper Whitney Beverly recorded the shutout with four saves.

Clayton State hits the road again next Saturday (Oct. 11) with a 1 p.m. contest at Peach Belt rival North Georgia.
