Laker
men and women open 2007 season with Georgia State Invitational on
Sept. 15
 MORROW,
Ga. – August 21, 2007 – The Peach Belt
Conference released its 2007
preseason polls for men’s and women’s cross country on Monday, and
Clayton State was picked third in both polls. The Laker women were
selected third in the 10-team women’s poll, and the Laker men were
selected tied for third in the six-team men’s poll.
"We’re ranked about where I guesstimate we can finish in the
conference," said Clayton State head coach Mike Mead. "It’s always
hard to judge where your team fits in against another team until you
get to see them in action."
In the women’s poll, Clayton State received two first place votes
and 67 points total, placing it behind Augusta State and defending
Peach Belt champion Columbus State. Behind Clayton State is Georgia
College, UNC-Pembroke, North Georgia, Francis Marion, USC-Aiken,
Lander and Georgia Southwestern.
Clayton State finished a close second in last season’s Peach Belt
championship, and the Lakers return two-time Division II
All-American and 2004 Peach Belt champion Allison Kreutzer.
In the men’s poll, the Lakers received 13 points, tying them with
North Georgia. Both teams are behind Georgia College and defending
Peach Belt champion Columbus State, while UNC-Pembroke was picked
fifth and Francis Marion was selected sixth.
Clayton State aims to reverse last season’s sixth-place finish at
the Peach Belt championships and Mead has reloaded the squad with
eight newcomers, paced by junior college standouts Anthony Aguilar
and Au Nguyen.
"Our women’s team will be battling for second, but no telling with
our men’s team," Mead said. "The men’s squad is much better than
last season and I’m confident we’ll finish in the top half. I’m just
not sure how high until we get a few races under our belts. It’s
just a matter of time and a lot can happen between now and late
October."
Clayton State opens the 2007 season on Sept. 15 with both teams
competing at the Georgia State Invitational.
